KrisAnn Norby-Jahner concentrates her practice in employment law, education law, and ERISA compliance and litigation, where she represents business owners, cities and other municipalities, and school districts in a variety of litigation matters.

In her employment law practice, KrisAnn provides employers with legal counsel involving a variety workplace issues, including general employee and workplace management; employment policies and handbook reviews; discrimination and retaliation; whistleblower issues; wage and hour law compliance; hiring and termination; neutral investigations; employment contract reviews; separation agreements; confidentiality agreements; unemployment benefits hearings; and employee benefits. She also offers employers legal compliance training seminars and has lectured on employment law considerations for both small and large business owners, supervisors, and human resource professionals. KrisAnn is a co-editor of the monthly North Dakota Employment Law Letter and the ND editor for the 50 Employment Laws in 50 States publication.

KrisAnn also works in education law, offering general advice and counsel to ensure School Districts remain compliant with state and federal laws; and she assists in other policy development, negotiations, investigations, discipline, and discharge matters. Education law is a natural fit for KrisAnn because in addition to her legal practice, KrisAnn has worked at several universities as an adjunct professor. She studied in both M.A. and Ph.D. programs, specializing in Law and Literature studies. She has taught legal research and writing, moot court, employment law, practical writing, composition, and other courses at the University of Minnesota Law School, Hamline University, Kent State University, North Dakota State University, the University of Mary, and Bismarck State College. KrisAnn is also very active in the United Way, Women United, and the Adopt-a-Classroom program offered in Bismarck elementary schools.

In her Employee Retirement Income Security Act ("ERISA") practice, KrisAnn counsels clients regarding general ERISA compliance and litigation issues whenever an employer offers insurance as a benefit to an employee under ERISA regulations. She can provide support in identifying required information disclosures, fiduciary duties, insurance continuation, and internal procedures for employee grievances and appeals. KrisAnn also has nuanced federal court experience in litigating benefit denials under long-term and short-term disability plans.

Prior to joining the Vogel Law Firm in 2015, KrisAnn practiced in the Twin Cities at Hellmuth & Johnson (Edina, MN) and Mansfield Tanick & Cohen (Minneapolis, MN). She obtained a J.D. from Hamline University School of Law, where she was active on Law Review, the National Moot Court team, and the Alternative Dispute Resolution program, earning certification in mediation and arbitration from the nationally-ranked Dispute Resolution Institute; Ph.D./ABD from Kent State University; M.A. from North Dakota State University; B.A. from Minnesota State University Moorhead; and A.A. from Minot State University-Bottineau, where she played college basketball.
